The work of the cross

even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”
(John 3: 14-15)

He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. (Hebrews 9: 26)

God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
(1 John 5: 11-12)

THE GREAT EXCHANGE

Jesus bore the wrath that we can pass from judgement

Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him;
He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin
(Isaiah 53: 10)

And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins (1 John 2: 2)

For God did not appoint us to wrath,
but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep,
we should live together with Him. (1 Thessalonians 5: 9-10)

…wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead,
even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come. (1 Thessalonians 1: 10)

…he who hears My word and believes
in Him who sent Me has everlasting life,
and shall not come into judgment,
but has passed from death into life. (John 5: 24)

By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many,
for He shall bear their iniquities.

 ….who was delivered up for our trespasses
and raised for our justification. (Romans 4: 25 ESV)

They pierced My hands and My feet;
I can count all My bones. (Psalm 22: 16-17)

But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.

Jesus bore our sin that we can bear His righteousness

And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (2 Corinthians 5: 21)

that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—
by whose stripes you were healed. (1 Peter 2: 24)

My strength is dried up like a potsherd,
And My tongue clings to My jaws;
You have brought Me to the dust of death. (Psalm 22: 15)

but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all,
having obtained eternal redemption. (Hebrews 9: 12)

(by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together,
and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus

that you through His poverty might become rich.
(2 Corinthians 8: 9)

Jesus carried our shame that we can share His glory

But I am a worm, and no man;
A reproach of men, and despised by the people.
All those who see Me ridicule Me;
They shoot out the lip, they shake the head (Psalm 22: 6-7)

He is despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

When Christ who is our life appears,
then you also will appear with Him in glory. (Colossians 3: 4)

have been brought near by the blood of Christ. (Ephesians 2: 13)

He made us accepted in the Beloved. (Ephesians 1: 6)

Jesus was cut off by death that we can be joined to God

For He was cut off from the land of the living;
For the transgressions of My people He was stricken. (Isaiah 53: 8)

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust,
that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh
but made alive by the Spirit (1 Peter 3: 18)

…that through death He might destroy him
who had the power of death, that is, the devil,
and release those who through fear of death
were all their lifetime subject to bondage. (Hebrews 2: 14-15)

for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor,
that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone. (Hebrews 2: 9)

Our old man was put to death in Him that we can walk in newness in Him

…who gave Himself for our sins,
that He might deliver us from this present evil age,

but that He loved us and sent His Son
to be the propitiation for our sins. (1 John 4: 9-10)

For to this end Christ died and rose and lived again,
that He might be Lord of both the dead and the living. (Romans 14: 9)
